What a cornucopia of visual treasures you can find at Etsy!
Today I was delighted to visit Etsy store Lucky Girl Trading (http://luckygirltrading.etsy.com) and discover the ancient art of Temari.
Temari balls are an folk art form that originated in China and were introduced to Japan five or six hundred years ago. The balls were made by mothers and grandmothers as balls for the children to play with (they were used in games similar to the hackeysack games played today). They were originally constructed from the remnants of old kimonos. In time Temari became an art, becoming more and more decorative and detailed. They are now a cherished gift symbolizing deep friendship and loyalty.
A group of Temari would make a striking display or a wonderful gift for a friend who collects beautiful Christmas tree ornaments. At Lucky Girl you will also find handmade pendants of sparkling dichroic glass and intriguing Kumihimo necklaces, intricate Japanese-style braids originally used by Samurai who to lace up their armor, wrap sword handles to create a secure grip, and to hang a sword on their belts.
Thank you Lucky Girl, for blogging about my work and leading me to discover these ancient arts.
